7 budget-friendly international destinations to explore with your BFFs on a long weekend, all under Rs 1 lakh (4)

Budget-friendly travel with friends, even if its a quick trip for a long weekend, is the ultimate adulting upgrade. As grown-ups, travelling with friends can be a nightmare to coordinate, and I say this from experience. The plus side, however, is that it's kind of like trading spreadsheets for sunsets and conference calls for co*cktails, all while proving that good times don’t have to break the bank. It's trying to capture that nostalgia of the good ol' days you've had together and escape from the mundane, where shared experiences drowns out the noise of boring routines and normality. Imagine swapping office gossip for global adventures, and trading your exhausting commute for exploration of foreign lands. Whether you rekindle old wounds or build new memories together, these budget-friendly trips are the adult equivalent of a sleepover, but with better food and fewer questionable decisions.

1. Vietnam

From the frenetic pulse of Hanoi's Old Quarter to the serene beauty of Halong Bay, Vietnam is a rollercoaster of experiences tailor-made for BFFs. Imagine slurping up pho together in the heart of Hanoi, or sharing a kayak through the emerald waters of Halong Bay. For a taste of old-world charm, Hue's imperial city awaits, while Hoi An’s lantern-lit streets offer a romantic escape. And let’s not forget the beaches of Nha Trang, perfect for soaking up the sun and perfecting your beach bod.

What to do: Vietnam is more than just sights and sounds. Rent motorbikes and lose yourselves in the countryside, discovering hidden villages and rice paddies that feel like a million miles from anywhere. Or, dive headfirst into Vietnam's culinary scene, exploring bustling markets and mastering the art of pho making. Remember, this is your BFF getaway, so ditch the guidebook and let spontaneity be your co-pilot.

Budget bookings: If you book a little bit in advance, then flight tickets can cost you anything between Rs 23,000 to Rs 24,000 to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City from Mumbai. The prices are slightly higher for flights taking off from Delhi and Bengaluru. If you are going with a large group of friends, then you can book out a room of bunk-beds and private rooms in a hostel. Not only is it economical, but also a great way to bond with your friends on a trip.

2. Cambodia

Cambodia is the ultimate blend of ancient history and tropical paradise, making it the perfect spot for a BFF adventure. Get ready to be awed by the magnificent Angkor Wat temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site that promises a deep dive into the country's rich culture. After soaking up its history, kick back with your friends on the pristine beaches of Sihanoukville or escape to the secluded islands of Koh Rong.

What to do: At Angkor Wat, you'll marvel at the grandeur of the temple complex, wandering through intricate carvings, exploring hidden pathways, and snapping stunning photos to treasure forever. When you’re ready for some beach time, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem offer the perfect escape. Here, you can snorkel, swim, and soak up the sun to your heart’s content. To truly experience the heart of Cambodia, dive into community-based tourism initiatives. This is your chance to learn about local culture, support local businesses, and give back to the community—all while creating unforgettable memories with your group of friends.

Budget bookings: The cheapest flights will cost around Rs 32,000 to Rs 35,000 from Delhi, Bengaluru or Mumbai to Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. When looking for flights, make sure that you check them in incognito mode to ensure that you don’t get an inflated price range.

3. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a tropical paradise that's tailor-made for a BFF getaway, especially. This stunning island seamlessly blends adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. Whether you're exploring ancient ruins with your besties, wandering through lush tea plantations, basking on pristine beaches, or feasting on delicious seafood, there's something to delight every palate.

What to do: Kick off your adventure by uncovering the historical treasures of the cultural triangle, where you can marvel at the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. These impressive ruins offer a fascinating journey through time, perfect for history buffs. Then, let your hair down on the idyllic beaches of Mirissa or Tangalle, where sunbathing, swimming, and indulging in fresh seafood become the order of the day.
