How do I check if there's a power outage in my area? ›

First, go to your main electrical panel to see if a breaker has tripped. If the problem is not in your home's wiring, contact our 24-hour Outage System at 770-775-7857 or report your outage on the Central Georgia EMC Mobile App or online by logging into your account.

To report an outage, call the Griffin Power Operations Center at 770-229-6406. Please have the following information available when you call: your name, street address, telephone number and account number. Also, tell us if other homes near you seem to be affected.

You can also call 508-947-3023 to report an outage. We appreciate your patience as this line may be very busy. Once your outage information is reported into our system, it will remain active until repairs are complete to the service line/equipment in your area. Duplicate reports cannot be accepted in the system.

As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.

Outages typically last 1-2 hours.

All water heaters use electricity for some of their functions. Natural gas based water heaters generate their own electricity, but electricity-based water heaters must have the power supplied. No power means no hot water. If you have heated water in a tank, it may stay warm for a little while after the power goes out.

However, the three most common causes are natural causes, human error, and overload. Basically, any interruption between power generation and the supply of electricity to homes can cause a power outage. It can stem from inclement weather conditions, human error, equipment failure, and even animal interference.

If disconnected, restoration of electric service will usually occur within minutes after a payment has been made and confirmed, but nearly always within 4 hours unless factors outside of the Company's control prevent reconnection.

If you have a powercut or powercut problem in your area then just dial 1912. Tell the BESCOM provider that you have a power cut, you can either tell them about the area where powercut has happened or just give your consumer ID. They will create a docket and the electrician will come and fix the issue ASAP.

If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and stay away. Call 9-1-1 immediately to report its location, and then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5002. Do not touch anyone or anything in contact with a downed power line. Keep children and pets away from fallen electric wires.

Use a receptacle voltage tester by plugging the device into the outlet. The lights on the device will come on to indicate the presence of a live electrical current. Test an electrical outlet with a non-contact voltage tester by holding the tester about an inch away from the short slot on the outlet.
